A man cries after his home was bombed during Israeli raids in the southern Gaza Strip , people in Gaza are posting messages on their Facebook profiles to let friends and family know they are still alive. Others have already prepared haunting messages to be shared in the event of their deaths.
“If you read this, it means we’re in the care of Allah. To my dear mum, sisters and brothers, to my dad, who left us many years ago but passed on his remarkable strength and courage to me, I tried with all my might and all my heart, gave it all I could to protect the children, but something else was planned for us. Don’t be sad, because we are in a place where we will feel no more pain.
Around 3,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli air strikes, according to the Gaza health ministry, and hundreds of thousands have been displaced, as Israel launches a military operation in response to the 7 October attack conducted by the armed wing of the militant group Hamas, which killed at least 1,400 people.
Even if Israel could eradicate Hamas through a repeat of its previous, barbaric bombing campaigns, openly targeting and levelling humanitarian infrastructure and civilian homes, it will only succeed in creating a new Gaza – even denser, poorer, and more desperate than before.
