The summer of 1952 was hot, even by Texas standards: 25 days above 100F , the “cool” days not much cooler. But across the state, swimming pools were shut. Cinemas, too, and bars and bowling alleys. Church services were suspended. Cities doused their streets with DDT insecticide; by now, health officials knew that mosquitoes didn’t spread the disease, but they had to be seen to be doing something. Nothing seemed to work. As the summer wore on, the numbers of polio cases grew.

Incredible man. Perhaps the most amazing person I have ever come across. I hope that his breathing will get stronger again. I also salute those that have helped support him, believe in him, let him live as normal a life as he can. So so humbling... Thank you.
My mother remembers the terror of having to shower at middle school after gym, knowing polio could be lurking in those warm, damp areas of the room. This man is so inspiring, along with his family, and his companion caregiver. Mask up for them.
Did Martha Lillard pass away in the past year?
As a kid I saw a film 'The Five Pennies' (1959) in which the protagonist's daughter caught polio and had to use an iron lung. It left a real impression on me and I have the heebie jeebies about the things even now.
