The objectives of this study were the following: examine whether the pulmonary fungal and bacterial microbiota differed in patients with sarcoidosis compared with controls; examine whether there was an association between the microbiota and levels of the antimicrobial peptides in protected bronchoalveolar lavage .
The causative agents inducing the immune response in sarcoidosis are yet somewhat of an enigma, but the immune system seems to respond to different substances by producing inflammatory cells organized in granulomas.
