The western idea that rage is an emotion that needs to be set free is not universally shared

Last December, in search of parenting wisdom, the NPR science reporter Michaeleen Doucleff headed to the Arctic. She’d read the work of the anthropologist Jean Briggs, whose 1970 book Never in Anger described the calm – almost serene – techniques used by Inuit communities to help children learn how to manage their emotions, and wanted to discover more about the possibility of teaching young people – her own daughter included – to control their anger without resorting to it herself.

The children are all perfect and wonderful and only ever messed up by parents idea has been shown to be incorrect by health professionals. That’s not to say that we don’t ever mess them up just that it’s far more complex than ‘don’t smack or shout’ theories.

I think this society in the UK is crazy. The pressure on everyone from all angles is immense. The Government in my opinion is to blame.

The whole Inuit populace? Really? Are you sure? Have you interviewed and asked every single one of them? gettingboringnow

I don't, bit of a generalisation there

Cos they are too cold to move their lips.

Because in the North Pole, there probably aren't busy roads that kids are frequently flattened by? Just a thought...

What a terrible headline - you seem to imply that especially when it comes to caring most about the well-being of children, this indigenous culture is more in touch with the correct & natural hing to do. You should know better, as a journalistic platform.

Because we have to force speech center activation as early as possible and encourage hyper sociality and desire expression as part of the preschool developmental toolbox and the shoehorn into all modern/urban life functionality.

That's cuz they are left to function on their own and dont have to deal with other people's bullshit stress

maybe their kids aren't as annoying

Please publish the statistics of Juvinile unrmployment, drug/alcohol abuse, & per capita suicide rates also.

.NPR also covered. Really good read for parenting. parentingtips

What have they got to shout at them for? Playing in the snow? Teasing a penguin? What a stupid comparison

'Cos you can't be heard calling them down for meals over the high volume rap music emanating from their rooms.

Cos 'we' aren't them!

Because we are not in to it.

Is that working for them? Or do their kids grow into obnoxious adults like everyone else's?

Because they are f**king irritating

Many of us don't have Inuit children? Cc: JohnCleese

Perhaps it's because the Inuit don't eat plants - plants make us angry at children - or it could be a useless comparison?

I don't shout at their children. Unless they are on my lawn.

Unreasonable Expectations

I've never shouted at my children- why do you?
