Beneath the streets of Lancashire lies a network of subterranean nuclear fallout shelters. Underneath homes, theatres and educational buildings across Lancashire, the bunkers hark back to a time when the fear of potential nuclear conflict felt very real.
The following years saw both America and the USSR stockpile enough weapons with nuclear capabilities to destroy the entire world several times over, sparking the Home Office to prepare the British public for such a catastrophic event by creating nuclear bunkers, Lancs Live previously reported. Several of these were built under the streets and buildings of Preston and Southport .
When in use, the centre would have been equipped with a powerful switchboard, as well as a private phone line plus teleprinters and transmitters, all part of an elaborate communications system to be put into use if Lancashire came under attack. Preston ROC Group HQ - Langley Lane ROC stands for Royal Observer Corps, the defence organisation employed to watch the skies of Britain for potential attacks. Their headquarters was located in Langley Lane, Goosnargh, on the outskirts of Preston, once the site of an RAF centre used throughout World War II.
