Ever more non-Māori are doing the haka – but shouldn’t be unless its integrity is preserved

I wonder if any of the French lawyers protesting their government’s pension reform with a haka, the Māori dance form, have ever set foot in New Zealand?

Ugh cringe. This lot and their precious haka. It’s over commercialised and jammed down your throat at every opportunity.

Whopper

Lol its a dance. Chill.

Petty entitlement, as usual.

Another thing to add to the list

Well if they weren't culturally appropriating it and screwing it up then white people would be breaking from their long held tradition of chewing, swallowing and regurgitating something less interesting but somehow more tolerable to white people.

The haka isn't yours...stop demanding what other people do with it.

Same author demands open borders & infinity immigration into New Zealand. Article aimed explicitly at Whitey, telling Whitey he's 'racist'. Author is prepared to see Maori erased from existence by infinity immigration, as long as he & Guardian get their dream of 'destroy Whitey'

As long as you stop playing Rugby.

It's on YouTube. Free for all...

The Macarena isn't yours - stop performing it 😂

Disagree. It is a national pride act and should be undertaken respectfully. One may not get it perfect, but the intention matters

I’ll perform whatever the fuck I want

Who gives a fuck

I hereby grant anyone and everyone permission to perform the haka to the best or worst of their ability Here you go, permission granted. For sure I have as much authority as this Morgan fellow

Get a grip. All culture involves appropriation.

Waltz is a European dance. Any other country should be forbidden from practicing it.

It's a dance. Not the Elgin marbles.

People say the same to me about the macarena....

The whole world loves Oktoberfest and Lederhosen and that is wonderful when Chinese and Americans try the Bavarian look

'don’t perform a haka you were never given permission to' Fuck off Morgan, I don't need permission for that. I'll move my body in any way I like.

Everything from every culture belongs to everyone... unless it's copyrighted of course.

If the Haka is not being performed correctly it is not the Haka! Or am I missing something?

Genuine question: who do you ask for permission? By the way Manoa did the Haka alongside his Maori friends, why is that a red carpet trick?

The Maori are not indigenous to New Zealand, they are settlers.

There really aren't any NZers who don't have Maori blood in them due to cross-ethnic relationships. I presume this headline and article are therefore referring to people outside NZ and the Pacific islands. For non-Polynesian cultures to do it, yes that would be odd.

I can understand this, for example if some Chinese people started preforming traditional ancient Alaska Native dance rituals I’d be highly offended. MyHeritage MyCulture

Oh Guardian, never change.

The internet is a british invention. It isn’t yours. Stop using it

Double Brown isn’t yours - stop drinking it! And fix the man some eggs! 🍳

I tend to agree here; cultures are better when they keep their traditions and distinction rather than blurring in a melting pot.

Oh get over it .Who gives a toss ?!

What about inclusivity & diversity? Only goes one way for some. Pathetic.

Its new zealandish, why are people from around the world adopt it? don`t they have their own cultural heritage?
