Priti Patel’s decision to exclude low-paid care workers from the government’s points-based immigration scheme plunges the sector further into crisis

In January, the Migration Advisory Committee laid out to government ministers some of the consequences of moving to a points-based immigration system. The social care sector, it pointed out, would be severely affected by new minimum salary thresholds, designed to keep out unskilled workers from abroad. This was because caring for the vulnerable and elderly was one of the most poorly paid occupations in the country, so foreign carers simply wouldn’t make the cut.

Care home owners want immigrants because they can pay them peanuts whilst reaping in huge profits whilst cutting corners.

I can barely think of anything more diabolical from a PM fresh out of hospital with Covid

You shouldn't be caring for others if injured. Come on now

Priti by name, horrible by nature.

We have had one of the worse ever tragedy, over 65k deaths, the country suffered, care workers & NHS staff worked 24/7 to save lives! What do they get? Insults, craps & slap after “clapping” for weeks! No freedom to travel & work! This is the worst ever govt!

The poor private care home owners are going to have to takea cut in profits and pay a decent wage now the endless stream of cheap exploitable labour is drying up...same as the 'poor' farmers.

How would we feel (apart from stunned) if the Govt. allocated sufficient budget resources to ensure that social care providers were able to pay their front line staff sufficient to attract and retain UK residents, otherwise part of the post Brexit and pandemic army of unemployed?

Why should we import our care workers? There are many people in the UK who can be carers....

They're an absolute shambles.

Yes, welcome to Tory Britain, where they will push you down, beat you within an inch of your life, spit on you, piss on you, then charge you for the convenience.

Wonder whether Ms. Patel’s parents would had qualified for this disgraceful points based immigration system 🧐

Doctors and nurses to get fast-track entry to UK under new immigration systemPriti Patel said the Health and Care visa will make it 'quicker for talented global health professionals to work in our brilliant NHS' My local GP and the nurses I see as an outpatient when I attend hospital have such poor English and heavy accents I limit conversation and rarely ask questions because of the lack of understanding I'll have in their answers. At times I feel like I'm receiving treatment abroad. Can’t imagine for one minute that the attraction is the world class NHSuk . Probably all the other benefits of being in Britain. Good. NZ: yes. UK: no.
