The disaster of Brexit is helping to hold the EU together

In parallel, following the first round of National Assembly elections in France, some fairly wild conclusions are being drawn, even to the point that English Europhobes are rejoicing and French Europhiles are fearful this round of elections means the end of the EU as we know it. So, far from the spectre of a fascist France emerging onto the European and world stage, it would be better to think of Fourth Republic France between 1945 and 1958, with endless shifting parliamentary majorities cobbled together to prevent the pro-Kremlin Communists getting any real power.

The BBC sends its well-intentioned but monolingual presenters to France, yet the sad fact is that, since Brexit, British reporting of politics in Europe has shrivelled compared to the endless coverage of every burp and hiccup of American politics.It is no accident that the leaders of both Britain and France are having a bad electoral summer. Both Rishi Sunak and Macron have backgrounds in elite banking, were star pupils at school and college, and exude boundless self-confidence.
