Amid the mad rush of preparing for St Patrick's day - the biggest trading day of the year - with pints of Guinness handed over to green-clad customers over bars around the world, Paul Leavy, landlord at The Station, made an observation about Irish bars.
Levenshulme favourite Fiddlers Green, the Chorlton Irish Club and Waxy O'Connors are among the once much-loved venues to close their doors for good in recent years. "Our record takings for a single day was St Patrick’s Day last year," he said. "That’s what we have to beat. St Patrick's is not just a day anymore, it's a weekend.
Levenshulme favourite Fiddlers Green shut last year after its owner decided to sell the pub, formerly known as Dicey Riley's, and retire. Regulars at St Kentigern's Social Club in Fallowfield have said they no longer feel welcome there and, Chorlton Irish Club has been closed since the lockdown of 2020.
The Shamrock was located on Bengal Street in Ancoats. One of Manchester's oldest Irish pubs, it dated back to 1808 and had served the area for over 200-years. In 2018, the pub's former landlord was left devastated when Marstons, the brewery that owned the pub, made the decision to close it for good. The venue was then taken over by new owners, Joseph Holt brewery, who have since told the M.E.N when it reopens, it will no longer be an Irish pub.
