Food reviews are relatively subjective things, as we all have different tastes and preferences. But when they are written by a well-known food critic, they can carry a little more weight. Columnist Grace Dent's gushing write up of her visit to the remote Pentonbridge Inn, in Penton, north of Carlisle is a prime example.
Nestled in the heart of what is known as Debatable Lands on the Anglo-Scottish border, the casual fine dining venue also has 'regular' diners scrambling to write about their experiences there, at similar speeds they are booking tables. The Pentonbridge Inn, sitting pretty in its own 'tiny country' and surrounded by stunning sandy-flats, rolling hills and close to Liddel Water, is rated highly on a host of online customer review platforms, including Google , TripAdvisor , Booking.
She does reference the menu's hefty price tag and eating "unabashedly poncy food" in the middle of a cost of living crisis, but despite such challenging factors, customers have not so far been deterred and the restaurant says requests for the dishes Grace devoured have been flooding in. “In the weeks since the publication of the review in The Guardian, we have seen a seven-fold increase in bookings for the restaurant compared to the same period last year and experienced a spike in followers on our social media accounts. It’s been a fantastic way to start 2023.”
