The arguing over a financial rescue package for hard-hit states shows that even member states don’t trust Europe, says Guardian columnist Simon Jenkins

The European Union has scraped through its latest crisis by the skin of its teeth. The past week has been a disgrace. When ministerial talks collapsed on Thursday over the plan for a “coronabond”, the reaction seemed terminal. Germans and Dutch insulted Italians and Spaniards. Italy’s prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, said his country faced an “economic and social emergency”, and the EU appeared not to care. The Danes spoke of “a financial crisis on steroids”.

Are you sure we want to be listening to Simon Jenkins' brainfarts about the coronavirus?

I gasped when I saw the author's name, because there's a (smarter) Simon Jenkins out your way. He's the editor of an online humorous Christian magazine. Very entertaining.

🤣😂🤣😂 Brexit & c19 have exposed the truth about the UK: it's not a real union & it hasn't got a real govt.

Simon Jenkins, on the other hand, is a bona fide twat.

Where's the 'we told you so' emoji? Remind us the point of the EU when they hide at a time like this?

If this event has taught us anything, it’s that a search for the perfect should not outweigh the ‘good’. For many of us, EU Union is valuable as an aspiration alone - and the ‘attempt’, however flawed, helps cement our shared culture and continent. Without loss of identity.

simonjenkins4 will the UK outlast the EU as we know them? Genuine question.

Yawn! While Uk gets ventilators from BBC!

Rubbish

This is a bizzarely blinkered article. Apparently the EU is not a close enough union now (like the USA or the UK, which are countries). Apparently lots of Europeans are in poverty and struggling now, but Simon Jenkins appears ignorant of the 1 million Brits who cannot get food 😥

As the EU agrees a major financial package, as the EU procures PPE as one, as the EU repatriated thousands of citizens (including Brits) & as EU Member States share staff, equipment & ideas. The EU is a real Union.

😎😐🥱 Brexit = BR best regards - Exit BRexit

From the mouth of the same 'journalist' who told us to take it with a pinch of salt...

Sorry Jenkins. There IS a deal. It took a while but that’s not a problem.

🤣A Guardianista pile-on. Lovely stuff. 😂

Internal disagreements = not a union. I take it the uk isn't a union either, by the same definition.

The United Kingdom is no longer in the European Union. You made the 'brexit'. Why are you further deluding the EU?

The EU like any Union or country can only stand permanently if it stands with the truth and teachings rooted in truth and we know who shows us 'the way, the truth and the life.'

This crisis has tested absolutely every country and state in the world so it’s not going to be all handholding in a circle at the moment. The EU will do as it always does and rise from this and will rise stronger and more united than ever. I’m damn glad to be an EU citizen anyway

Too early to analyze the “truth”. As every intergovernmental models, it takes time to find a path when so many countries are involved. Now look at the history of EU, at each time a crisis, at each time an answer (even if it was sometimes a long) and at each time more integration.

This article is untruth and dishonesty. When one is British, English all the more so, one cannot criticize a Europe which has been refused any federal evolution for years.

correct without a doupt...

No, it's a common market of countries wanting to take advantage over their neighbors, ie exactly what Thatcher wanted

Neither is America. It’s the biggest joke on the planet right now.

Pandemic is showing us the real face of companies that care for their staff, those that have planned for a rainy day, countries that care for it's citizens over economics, and in this situation unions that were brought about for other reasons than helping each other when in need

With all the flaws, it is still better to be united.

What utter nonsense. You are having a go at the EU but its institutional capacity in this area is limited by the *states* & the lack of EU-level decision from a central executive, which again is the fault of the states by guarding their sovereignty.

It absolutely has not exposed that.

And the UK is a union of equals ?

It is a myth and this EU has a deep medieval mentality..

Thy British feels so wise

I don't think it's better to judge the EU!

Well done Simon. You've realised what many of us have know for some time.

Forcing it to become a closer union.

In normal times Brexiters complain the EU is too powerful. During a crisis they complain it is too weak Conclusion: they're idiots
