So that’s the set-up, and it’s a fairly compelling one, but there are several problems here. Firstly, while Waltz is giving it his all, it feels as though an algorithm has assigned him a bunch of random kooky characteristics for no apparent reason: extreme difficulty with walking up and down stairs, a hyper-sensitive sense of smell and a penchant for churros at 3am.
It’s equally difficult to care about anyone who is affected by his disconcerting behaviour. The nameless CompWare employees largely blend into one pointless mass, while those given the most screen time and character development, Elaine and Craig, never really graduate from feeling like colleagues you nod and say hi to in the office kitchen without any idea of which department they actually work in. There is implied sexual tension there but the chemistry, sadly, is missing.
