The competition is on as high-speed trains are set to get cheaper in Spain 🇪🇸 Spain now has the world’s second longest high-speed rail network after China and could be a leader for other European nations to follow

Average prices for tickets on high-speed trains between Madrid and Barcelona have dropped by 25 per cent since Ouigo started operating last year, according to Spain’s competition watchdog, CNMC. At the same time, passenger traffic on the route has risen by 47 per cent, and is up by 14 per cent along Spain’s entire rail network since May 2021, according to Adif, Spain’s rail infrastructure operator.

The operator has a lowest one-way fare of €18, more than rivals Ouigo and Avlo . However, Iryo said it allows customers to change their journey times, unlike its competitors. Iryo claims it is the “most sustainable, fastest and quietest” rail operator in Europe, with a 5G connection for mobile phones. It also says up to 95 per cent of its trains are made from recyclable materials and allow “savings of carbon dioxide of up to 80 per cent per person and per journey”.As Spain struggles with a cost of living crisis, cheaper and faster rail travel has been welcomed to help the country’s, which accounts for 12 per cent of GDP.

“High speed travel has lost its elitist character and there is competition. It has reached the democratisation which we were looking for,” Spain’s transport minister, Raquel Sanchez, said after Iryo’s inaugural journey on Monday between Madrid and Valencia.
