It has been 105 years since women were given the vote and 96 years since they successfully fought for that vote to be equal to a man's. However according to government data women across Greater Manchester are still not paid anywhere near the same as men. In one borough, for every £100 a man is paid, a woman is likely to earn £83.
While this picture is bleak, the figures also reflect Manchester as a city of change, with women closing the gap on male salaries more than most other parts of the country, with women on average across the UK receiving 14 per cent less in their pay packet than men.It has been a requirement for businesses over a certain size to publish their gender pay gap statistics since 2017.
Yet, across every region of Greater Manchester women are earning less than men. Whether it is a relatively small amount, as in Tameside where the difference is two per cent, or a whopping 17 per cent difference between the salaries of men and women in Stockport.
