The accidental message in Liz Truss’s bizarre Easter lamb photo op

‘Since when did politicians think it necessary to intrude into our sacred bank holiday weekend with banal goodwill messages?’

There is Ms Truss for all to see on the social media platform X : a failed and disgraced former prime minister, standing in front of a derelict church, holding a live lamb , with the caption: “Happy Easter!” First of all, there’s the lamb. Doesn’t this force us all, subconsciously, to conjure a mental image of the poor animal being slaughtered before being served up at the table, in the Paschal tradition?

I wouldn’t mind, but she uses the religious imagery on the holiest day of the Christian calendar, while not even being a fully-fledged believer. In 2022, she told a newspaper: “I share the values of the Christian faith and the Church of England, but I’m not a regular practising religious person.” So there’s a thin layer of hypocrisy heaped on top of the gross error of judgement.
