The 12 smartest college football coaching hires of the past dozen years

, which dealt primarily with college football coaches who flamed out spectacularly. This week, it’s coaches who’ve been wildly successful.

But let me be crystal clear in what I mean by “smartest” hires. These are hires who were not on anyone’s list of hot candidates at the time and weren’t obvious choices to anyone other than the athletic director making the hire. In other words, not Ohio State hiring Urban Meyer or Georgia hiring Kirby Smart . These were cases where the AD saw something the rest of us didn’t.

Turns out, the humble and highly personable Pittman was exactly who Arkansas needed coming off Chad Morris’ disastrous 4-18 tenure that included losses to four Group of 5 teams and zero SEC wins. Pittman’s 2020 team won three of its first six games against an all-SEC schedule, followed by a 9-4 season and Outback Bowl win.

It’s one thing for an FBS school to hire an FCS coach. Then-Buffalo AD Danny White took his search much deeper than that, hiring a Division III coach.
