Last night Take That were back on home turf as they kicked off the first of five nights in the city as part of their epic This Life On Tour shows. A jubilant home crowd welcomed back the three-piece with open arms - but it almost didn’t happen.
“Well thank bloody god we got on here tonight,” beamed Gary Barlow, before turning the joke on himself. “This is definitely my idea of a very nice night out this is,” referencing a now viral meme about himself after a recent visit to a vineyard. Highlights included a huge retro TV screen from which the three-piece first appeared, and which was later transformed into the backdrop of a 1960s-style TV show, chronicling the group’s journey through some of their biggest hits, from Pray and Patience, to The Flood and Greatest Day.
“We could not, not play Manchester, we’re so happy to be here, " he added, before smiling and saying: “Good luck Co-op,” which prompted a laugh from the crowd. Last week, Co-op Live had to cancel several concerts due to a ‘technical issue’. At the end of April, Peter Kay’s performances were postponed, before A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie’s gig on the rearranged opening night on Wednesday was called off at the last minute and moved to the AO Arena on Saturday, May 4.
