Leaked documents seen by the Mail show that international students, workers and visitors are exploiting the hidden 'back door to Britain'.

Over 20,000 asylum claims were made by visa holders in 2023, a rise of 154%Tens of thousands of foreign nationals entering Britain on visas are lodging asylum claims to stay permanently.

It means one in every 140 people who entered on a visa went on to claim asylum. And over the past decade more than 102,000 applied to stay after being allowed in only temporarily. 'We are being treated as absolute mugs. People are coming here with no need to claim asylum but are doing so because they seek a better life than they would have in their relatively poor home countries. It comes at huge cost to the British taxpayer and undermines faith in the rule of law.'

Operational stages of the asylum scheme will start within days after new laws were finally passed last week. The Home Office confirmed yesterday that there were 359 arrivals by small boat across the Channel on Saturday. The speed of those asylum claims will prompt suspicion that applicants had always intended to try to stay in Britain permanently.
