BREAKING: Strep A death toll rises to 16 after teenager dies of illness.

Another child has died after contracting Strep A, the 16th fatality during a recent spike in cases.The teenager has not been named but attended the Hove Park School in Brighton.reported.

Alistair Hill, director of Public Health at Brighton & Hove City Council said: ‘We are working with the UK Health Security Agency and Hove Park School following the death of a pupil who attended the school.supports HTML5 video While the vast majority of infections are relatively mild, sometimes the bacteria cause life-threatening illness called invasive Group A Streptococcal disease.The bacteria are spread by contact with an infected person or by contact with infected skin lesions.The risk of spread is greatest when somebody is ill, such as when people have strep throat or an infected wound.

Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome is a rapidly progressing infection causing low blood pressure/shock and damage to organs such as the kidneys, liver and lungs.Strep A infections such as scarlet fever and impetigo are treated with antibiotics.Anyone thought to have invasive Group A Streptococcal disease should seek medical help immediately. Antibiotics, other drugs and intensive medical attention are likely to be needed.
