The girl and her family had been at Keaton Beach in northwestern Florida when the attack took place. She had been searching underwater for mollusks in water about 5-feet deep near Grassy Island, off of Keaton Beach, when she was bitten by the massive shark.
The teen, who has not been identified by officials, was airlifted to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare about 80 miles northwest of the beach to receive treatment for her injuries. Officials in Florida have not yet determined what kind of shark attacked the girl, but witnesses said it was about nine feet long.
