A teammate of tragic Nottingham Panthers star Adam Johnson has said the team 'stand with' the Sheffield Steelers player who he collided with. Westin Michaud posted a statement on X, formerly Twitter, after Steelers defenceman Matt Petgrave was the target of online abuse following the fatal collision in a Challenge Cup game between the two teams on Saturday, October 28.
The ice hockey community has rallied around Petgrave but some online trolls have targeted him following the incident. Dave Simms, spokesperson for Sheffield Steelers, said the team has already blocked many accounts following the abuse and claims they 'will not stand for it.'Michaud, who like Johnson joined the Panthers in the summer for the 2023/24 Elite Ice Hockey League campaign, posted a message of support to Petrgave.
"The unintentional clip of the Panther player's leg by the Sheffield player caused the somersault. It's clear to me his actions were unintentional and anyone suggesting otherwise is mistaken. Let's come together and not spread unwarranted hate to someone who needs our support."
