TEACHERS are spending their own on food and clothes for poverty-stricken pupils, a report revealed.

Many are also unable to take part in school activities or trips because their parents cannot afford to pay for them. One teacher said: “We have bought uniform items and pretend they are from students who have grown out of them.” Most teachers think the effects of poverty have got worse over the last two years – with 49 per cent saying it has a significant impact on their progress in school.

NEU boss Mary Bousted said: “The government does not want to hear these truly shaming stories from the frontline of teaching but it must.“Ministers must stop blaming schools for the impact of its austerity policies upon the most vulnerable in our society and take action to alleviate the suffering of the increasing numbers who are living in poverty.”

“Our schools and teachers are being left to fend for themselves and deal with the consequences of these cuts.”
