Ukrainian teacher who fled country on foot is now building new life in Skelmersdale

In February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of what he called a "special military operation" in Ukraine. From that moment, the world watched in horror as the might of Russia's armed forces rolled across the border in a full-scale military invasion which turned the lives of millions of civilians upside down in an instant.

As a result, in August 2022, Elena and her two boys set off from Germany to their new home in Skelmersdale.

Not only has Elena managed to comfortably fit into her new life in England but so have her children, with five-year-old Dima becoming accustomed to his new school. Back in Ukraine, Dima was in Kindergarten and would learn "logic stuff" such as puzzles, games and mazes, as opposed to language techniques and phonics.

"We had parents' evening about two weeks ago and his teacher said he's making the greatest progress, having no English in the beginning, no phonics, nothing. He's made huge progress, I'm very proud of him and he's doing his best. For now, they've got their own council house, which she says is part of their "own adventure" as she has not told them the truth about the war, but will when they're older. The family are hoping to one day return back to their family and Elena's husband, the children's father, who is still in Ukraine.
