In a guest opinion series debating the wisdom of peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, CChivvis argues that “the risk of escalation into a broader, more destructive war will persist as long as the fighting does”

, the war in Ukraine will pass its one-year mark with no end in sight. The costs are mounting, Europe faces an epic refugee crisis, tens of thousands of people have died and total casualties now run into the hundreds of thousands. Plans to provide Ukraine with Western tanks, announced in recent days, indicate that America, Germany and others are settling in for a much longer war. But in a prolonged conflict, far more will perish.

With luck the tanks may encourage Vladimir Putin to consider negotiations seriously. But he still cannot afford to retreat with nothing to show for his war, however deplorable it is. Given how much he has staked on this operation, its failure—let alone a larger loss that includes Crimea or other territory Russia took in 2014—would risk a revolt from inside Russia’s elites that destabilises his regime.

In America Congress has already voted for over $100bn in military, financial and other support to Ukraine. But public support for such measures is fading. A poll published in December from the Chicago council, an American think-tank, found that the share of Americans who believe that Washington should support Ukraine for “as long as it takes” dropped to 48%, down from 58% in July.

Many critics of negotiations object to the idea of diplomacy with a man like Mr Putin on principle, but Western powers should and do regularly negotiate with adversaries, including contemptible ones, when it serves national interests and prevents violence and human suffering.

So amusing when one of third of your country has been annexed. This pseudo expert seems much more a pro Putin activist than anybody else. Bad try TE

This is a proxy war between the USA and Russia. I doubt Zelensky has any say. The people suffer.

Lütfen bunu görebilen herkes burada mahsur kaldım depremde evimiz yıkıldı lütfen yardımınıza ihtiyacım var 🙏

So when is he going over to try? If it so easy?

😑😑

Secondly, for Russia, the negotiation It means that Ukraine must face Ukraine’s request to return the occupied territories. If it chooses to return, the 70-year-old former KGB agent in the Kremlin will not accept it.

The timing of the negotiations is not right now. First of all, for Ukraine, they will face the risk of permanently losing their occupied land. For a comedian, this does not meet the happy ending of a comedy, and it is impossible to be accepted.

How many lives will it save in the future as Rus continues to re-expand?

Ukrainian men carrying the brunt (actually fighting) will decide when they had enough. American voters (taxpayers) will decide when they had enough supporting Ukraine (by voting). Not useless RAND nerds who miserably failed to predict Ukraine's effective resistance.

I love the 'experts' who sitting in their comfy chairs far far away from danger knows exactly the words that will end Putin´s terror regime - at the cost of Ukrainian soil and lives.

So brilliant. Talks have been tried and Russia simply increased their attacks against civilians. Just come out and say it, 'Ukraine like Czechoslovakia, must surrender territory to make their fascist neighbour happy. If Russia remains unhappy, give more.' Problem solved! Peace!

Had there been just a bit of more talks between the Third Reich and countries that didn’t want to face up to evil - my entire family would’ve been wiped out. What Russia is doing must stop. Then it must enter talks about reparations to Ukraine and the entire world. China is key.

Sure, but would you talk to a guy who is planning to murder you?

When people without brains lead the result is often terrible mistakes.

Except the preconditions for negotiations set out by Russia, is for Ukraine to give up 4 sections of Ukraine which Russia has held illegal referendums to seize. If you fo give in to Russian. Where do you stop? Poland? Moldova? The old East Germany ?

CChivvis

CChivvis Or, you know, Russia could just get the fxck out of Ukraine

CChivvis Negotiate only from a position of strength. Fight till you get one.

Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s war of annihilation of Ukraine is coined as “war aims,” or better yet “grand” aims.” This piece is riddled with carefully worded propaganda. For shame, The Economist! Russia plans to go way past Ukraine so it is in our vital interest to stop it

It's a no brainer....

Peace between Russia and Ukraine will result in mortal blow to US military/arms industry, because Israel -Iran conflict cannot replace the lost order book, as Israel has none of purchasing power of taxpayers of NATO and Ukraine (-using loans from US banks). Only Taiwan can do it

CChivvis Is the author of this article unaware of the Budapest Memorandum?

CChivvis Tell us how you would have peace negotiations with an entity that's fundamentally untrustworthy on the subject of peace treaties.

CChivvis

CChivvis How much of UKR you want to reward Russia for his illegal war? Freezing the conflict only helps putin to consildates its gains and army. It would be a great pretext for china. Very dangerouse thinking.

CChivvis Do you see any indication that RUS is willing to hand back currently Russian-occupied territory of UKR in exchange for anything, if so, for what? How would Rest-UKR, acc. to you to be integrated in Europe, be protected from Russian aggression? By arming UKR, I presume?

CChivvis Did they have a similar debate in 1943 when Nazi Germany was in control of territory where it was perpetrating genocide? If so, was the at the centre of those efforts?

CChivvis I'm aghast but not surprised. Ukrainians are fighting and dying for everything the West has stood for since WWII. Their harsh reality is catastrophic, real and tragic. Your harsh reality is you're not worthy of their sacrifices. Not a bit.

CChivvis Never

CChivvis Why do NONE of these advocates, ZERO, ever say what they think Ukraine should negotiate? If they can't do that then it's just waffle

CChivvis The risk of escalation can be reduced to zero if Russia withdraws its troops.

CChivvis Neither Minsk 1, or Minsk 2 prevented this invasion from happening. Why would Minsk 3 prevent future war?

CChivvis As Golda Meir once said, you can’t negotiate with someone who’s come to kill you.

CChivvis Exactly wtf is there to “talk” about? Get out of Ukraine it doesn’t belong to you.

CChivvis Finally a rational thought

CChivvis So, what elonmusk said...
