When tens of thousands of fans belt out every word of the songs performed by Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald this weekend one or two may well remember their first performance in the city. At the former Wilford Meadows School in 1991 the trio, as well as Robbie and Jason, performed for a group of teenagers, most of whom had no idea who they were.
Kay remembered: “It was a bit embarrassing as we were all sat in the school hall wearing our uniforms while they jumped around on stage. I became quite a fan. I wish I’d got their autographs at the time.” Laura Flanagan, who is going to the gig this weekend, ended up getting a kiss and a hug from each band member. She was still at primary school but was lucky enough to see the performance because her dad was a caretaker at Wilford Meadows - now the Emmanuel School.
Former Post reporter Louise Duffield, who covered the gig for the paper, made an embarrassing faux pas when she asked Robbie what instrument he played. Louise said: “I can remember the band turned up in an old van, having slept in it from wherever they’d been performing the night before. They were all crumpled.
