London Fire Brigade criticised for 'serious shortcomings' and systemic failures in its response to Grenfell Tower fire

But it found many"institutional" failures that meant the LFB's planning and preparation for the incident was"gravely inadequate".

The Grenfell families wanted this level of criticism, especially those whose relatives died when they were told for nearly two hours to stay put in the building as it was covered in flames. So they are seeing some blame apportioned and they hope they will eventually see justice but the Grenfell survivors will always suffer the loss and grief and ask the question how did 72 people die in what was supposed to be the safety of their homes?

Firefighters who attended the fire did not have training on how best to combat a cladding fire, the report added.

So easy to scapegoat rather than looking at root cause!!

😡😡😡😡how dare they blame this on those who risked their lives that night! Years of neglect underfunding and corner cutting!!!

Absolutely disgusting to blame them. They risked their lives to try and save others!

night Shameful blame game. They are a reactive service that have to rescue the mess of those that make terrible decisions.

What a way to support your emergency services. 💯 heroes in my eyes.

LondonFire LFBCommissioner U need to cut complexity in both CtrlRoom x GroundCtrl Teams x empower intelligent quick decision-making as situations change. Equipment to tackle large scale fires needs a Technical Overhaul as it didn’t look fit for purpose.

Wow. What a slap in the face to all those service men and women who put their lives on the line.

The fire brigade didn’t put the cladding up or start the fire

The LFB responded in accordance with the information they had at the time. There is no way they could have known about the cladding and the way the fire behaved as a result.

The wonder of 20 20 hindsight

😡

How you can lay blame at the door of the people that walked head first in to an inferno to save human beings lives is beyond me. Yet the people that change specs, put inferior products on buildings get away Scot free 😱

Only thing that concerns me (not that it matters) is residents being told to stay put for 2 hours by the fire service whilst the fire is raging. That seems a bloody long time whilst cladding is going up like a forest fire.

They made the best decisions on the information available, maybe in hindsight it was not correct & lessons need to be learned but the headline is disgusting & purely sensationalist. There is a military saying no plan survives contact with the enemy & that is what happened here.

The whole incident would of been a kind of organised chaos, gathering accurate information would be challenging, access awkward, control difficult. The Plans made for this type of incident ineffective due to the cladding. That along with dealing with casualties & spectators.

It’s always easy to criticise after the event sat in an air conditioned room with time to ask questions, look at different angles interview experts listen to witnesses. Take a couple of years. This happened in a few hours & was a scenario that hadn’t occurred before.

Staying in their homes was correct, people died because of inadequate fire precaution provided by the landlords

Yep, blame the fire brigade. Shameful....👊

BorisJohnson told them to “get stuffed” when they warned him about the effect of cuts. He should apologise immediately!

LondonFire and all fire services are the ones running into danger while others run from it. The fault lies with insufficient building materials (cladding) and massive cuts to the fire service. Terrible investigation work

Firefighters running into burning buildings putting their lives at risk to save others are heroes end of 🔥👩🏼‍🚒🚒

Just looking for some one or some body to blame

Easy to lay blame sad they have But the council did z cheap job in the Frist place Am sure looking back this should have been different Sad that all the people died think of there family’s my heart goes out to them

What an absolute joke. Where are the headlines about the repeated warnings made to politicians? If you are interested look at insidehousing ‘s excellent investigation.

Disgusting whitewash that deserves being investigated itself. Maybe take the report writer out on a few shouts and see how they cope?

The twat in charge of this inquiry needs chucking on the fire. He has hind sight, the fire brigade did not. Firefighters are heroes and don't blame their boss, she did all that was possible at the time

If it's all about the blame game blame the people who made this highly inflammable toxic cladding and the council who gave the OK - do not blame our wonderful fire service for doing what they thought right at the time.

I bet Gavin Barwell would be heaping praise on the fire service if they saved his home and family from fire or cut him free of the wreckage of his car after a RTC instead he wants to stab these wonderful people in the back they didn't build the damn place or clad it.

Be bloody thankful we have a brilliant fire service the amount of lives they save is beyond reproach, my father was a fire fighter for nearly 30 years with kit that would make a modern one squirm with fear, if they lost anyone to a fire they it affected them deeply

Nothing but the most shameful state propaganda this.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing - what about the developers who put this death trap up, and the politicians who let them?

local council to blame also. govt to blame also.. still no infrastructure in place should it happen again

We are blaming a service that went to help risking there own lives...for a council refurb job done by rydon homes with no fire checks done on any materials and the correct fire prevention being installed and signed off....I think the blame is being aimed at the wrong service

Yet again Tories blaming everyone else for their mess.

I feel for the firemen why should they get the blame for not getting people out they dident no the state of the building

stop using the emergency services as a scapegoat. Brave men and women went running into that blaze that night to save people as they have time and time again. They had procedures to follow that have been used time and time again & many are suffering PTSD because of what they saw.

Seriously. So it the LFB fault that government did not have tabs on the failures of building regs. The LFB do a real job unlike the blame cultured MPs .

No chance of getting an Apology and admission of wrong doing when it's a Woman in charge...

How about the closure of all those Fire Stations and budget cuts. Cutshaveconsequences

night Systematic failures in democracy, justice and logic... So... Nobody held account for the circumstances, the build, the cost of lives, the cuts the services... Wow, just wow... What a well and truly f*cked up country we live. Money Money Money Money Money

I think the fire department did the best they could in the situation they’ve never faced before. To criticise them is just unfair and unjust. The ones to blame are the ones who allowed the fire to spread by not providing the residents with proper fire proof facilities 🥺

How about Landlord 'criticized' for cladding the building in flammable material? No-one in the fire department should be criticized

With a command structure where promotion is by gender , ethnicity ,and Political correctness and so forth people are promoted way beyond their ability And it's not just this particular organization

night There is always something to learn from every disaster just like in 9 11 when terrorist walked on board a plane. But to call them serious shortcomings at the beginning of an investigation is harsh. LFB probably rarely experience a fire on this scale due to bad building materials

People would have been at risk is the building had been upgraded properly. Don’t put the blame on the Emergency Services you disgusting shits.

Absolutely transparent and utterly disgusting attempt to deflect from the real failings that caused this tragedy. Without the heroics of an underfunded and overstretched fire brigade even more lives would have been lost.

The public doesn't see the reality of this farce. It will just become a distant memory of the past. Forgotten even if it was 1000 lives taken the government will just play stupid.

Is it me am I stupid. Forget that somebody used inappropriate materials. Why is the fire department having to pass a building with a safety test certificate? They are the most important and the last to inspect such a building. Look at the paper trail.

It takes guts to run toward something others are running away from.

The hindsight police have had their say. w⚓s.

Again a disaster and fingers get pointed at those doing all they can to save lives. When will the blame fall on those responsible for the failings in the construction of the building and the planning inspectors/officers that signed it off.

Should be put down to unchecked migration, Illegal people many of whom should not have been clogging up the system in the first place.

In your race to the bottom to join the newspapers in the gutter, what editorial judgement did you exercise in ignoring the inquiry chair’s embargo and not allowing the families their right to see the report before the media and govt spin it?

Y they not blaming the cladding company or the person that started the fire. If that was the case

Bet that’s down to the lefties. The LondonFire acted with great bravery and courage that night. Blame the designers.

Fire fighters weren’t responsible for The -overly-stingy council -cladding being there -lack of a sprinkler system -fire -government’s “stay put” policy. This catastrophe happened because MANY ppl failed. Let’s not lose sight of that/allow fire fighters to be scapegoated.

LFB being thrown under the bus. Classic diversion and cover up. Just throwing the idea out there, don't wrap apartment blocks in combustible materials. Maybe, just maybe, look into that. Just a suggestion.

How dare they criticise the brave fire fighters of LondonFire brigade, who risked there lives to save others. GrenfellTower

Absolute bollocks!

mrichalan BBC.Mates with the Elite and governed by them revel in such a headline. pretty obvious that those that set up an Inquiry are going to assure that the results dont blame them at all. And here the BBC is complicit in fogging the true story!!!

Unbelievable that people who throw their own lives into danger to rescue others are criticised. This should be internal, if they learned from the event fine but DO NOT blame those that risked death doing their job. The blame lies elsewhere

Translation: Capitalist corner cutting slumlords, blame hero’s for their death chamber

We’ll surely the first thing u do is vacate the building and not just sit in a burning building, I know I’d have gotten the hell out of there ASAP.

🤬

Yep let's blame the firefighters.🐑

My only observation would be ,why were there no helicopters to either rescue people from the roof or to poor water on the tower from above; as in forest fires.?

Blaming the fire brigade for having trouble dealing with a building which was converted into a pyre without notifying them is the real culprit.

Ok criticize the London Fire Service but not the firemen/women. They risked their lives.

night The root cause is this failing Tory government!

night So there you have it, a building wrapped in a flammable material to save money, but who gets the blame ? the housing association who run the building? the government ? The council ? NO the firefighters who risked everything to try and save lives..scapegoats

So easy to blame the fire services, when councillors, MP's and even those who constructed the building walk away Scott free

This was the fault of the people responsible for the building. Firefighters and emergency services only did their very best to save lives.

CAUSE: Wrap the building in highly flammable materials. EFFECT fire fighters find tackling the blaze impossible. RESULT so many beautiful innocent people lost their lives. CONSEQUENCES tower owners should get prosecuted for their deaths.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

There also needs to be a review of how Government Ministers responded to reports from earlier fires in high rise buildings.

Those men and women of the London Fire Brigade put their lives on the line by entering a burning building. They simply followed the guidance on tackling fires in tall buildings. It is clear that the owners and people responsible for the refurbishment require scrutiny.

Nothing wrong with the Tory council then..........and failure to build it properly...

Local council?

BBC should be highlighting the failures that caused the fire .It was government ministers and lack of building control that were criminal causes of the fire .The fire service might have done better but are not the cause of the fire.

If only we had a public broadcasting service that would investigate why this report was leaked and why grieving Grenfell residents are subject to NDAs.

Utter bullshit.

Scapegoats.

Just remember it’s the incredible brave fire fighters at the sharp end that went in to save lives. Don’t target every fire fighter with this criticism . Aim it at those that prepared the Standard Operation Procedure, Stand strong with our brave fire crews 💪🏻👊

I remember as a child being told 'If you're in a burning building GET OUT'. In unusual situations follow your instincts whatever you're advised.

Any journalist or politician or enquiry panellist that was up the stairs in that burning tower before, or more times than, any of the firefighters involved is allowed to condemn. Others should choose their words very carefully indeed

He then inflicted the largest cuts ever seen on the London Fire Brigade.

The cladding was flammable, which made the speed & ferocity of this fire unprecedented in the UK. The Fire Brigade’s advice to stay in apartments under normal circumstances saves lives. I’m sure the FB has many lessons to learn, but how is this THEIR fault vs owners & government?

Here's what London mayor BorisJohnson said as he was secretly planning the largest cuts ever inflicted on the London Fire Brigade. Chair of the fire authority at the time? JamesCleverly

This is insane. The problem was the cladding. There was no way the fire service could have made this right, or coped effectively. Level blame at the right people!

No doubting the heroism of the firefighters but their management is stuck in a 1970s world of over-powerful unions and non-reform. Time to move into the 21st century. Now deal properly with those who clad the building, and the dirty tories who allowed it.

Erm did they vote against legislation requiring the building to be habitable and fitted with fire alarms? Oh right yeah that was the Tories. 🙄

Easy to judge with hindsight isn't it

Disgusting to blame the fire service!! Blame lies firmly with building designers planners councillors etc who approved sub standard materials! Respect to the fire union leader on BBC today trying to set the record straight!

Don’t put cheap flammable cladding on the outside of the building. Architects are to blame

Hope folk can now see why the Government turned this inquiry around leaving Firefighters and Fire Control Staff to face early criticism. Leaving PM (as Mayor), Ministers, Councillors, building contractors years away from taking any responsibility. 😤

Protect Torys at all costs = Blame firefighters

Shame on all in this enquiry. It's obvious to absolutely anyone that LFB were presented with exceptional circumstances and followed procedure to the letter. The fact that the building was not up to standard was not their fault. Utterly disgusting way to treat brave heros!

LFB played a part in unnecessary deaths and that is highlighted. Yet individuals want them excluded and no portional blame. The organisation is there to deal with all fires and to put it out or maximise lives saved. Learn from it and move on.

The building was wrapped in flammable materials. So, the fire brigade who didn’t have enough time to get people out are at fault?

Also, why isn’t the fact that UK fire regs that forbade the cladding used, were overruled by EU environmental regs that specified it, not being highlighted. It would be an outrage if politics is being played to keep this quiet because of other things that are happening.

Why couldn't the BBC have waited until the report was formally published on Wednesday before discussing this topic

Probably overstretched due to increasing cut backs

a cheek to the blame our fb I'm disgusted it's well known across the country in a fire situation in block flats a stay put policy is in place unless the fire is in yr property!! How about the council or housing association whoever's is responsible for install cladding notfbfault

johnsweeneyroar I hope the fire brigade make a stand against the vile corrupt government who are scapegoating them!

No doubt there were serious mistakes by the fire service on the night. The question remains why did the fire spread the way it did.

📰 absolute bollocks, the fingers are still and should be very much pointed at those that constructed the building with the cladding and sprinkler issues!

It was the Tory government. Get your f**king headline correct. bbcnews generalelection2019 itvnews skynews channel4news

Great make the fire brigade SCAPE GOATS SWFireandRescue itvnews piersmorgan LondonFire

johnsweeneyroar Oh. Ok, blame the FireBrigade. Not ok.

The only failings were Boris cutting the numbers in the fire service and closing stations. Oh and maybe the local council for choosing the cheaper option and the builders who put the cladding on. Plenty of failings but not one down to the LondonFire

Come on BBC ! A domestic machine caught fire Unsafe foam around windows Fire free to spread outside confines of original flat Cladding unsafe Complex causes of disaster. But BBC targets public servants who put their lives at risk while following protocol Shame on you

What about the root cause? They didn't construct the building. Seems like a scapegoat to me.

By the time you found translators for each language of illegal immigrant to shout 'get out' it would have been too late and they dare not run out for fear of capture

While this horrendous fire must be investigated it is inappropriate to castigate the fire service on the first leak of the initial report— cause and effect should take priority-how much lobbying has occurred from the manufacturing and building regulations bodies here Focus that

Doesn't seem fair to blame those who tried to save people (albeit using erroneous information) rather than the people who messed up the refurb. And to make it worse some landlords who haven't sorted out the cladding issues are getting gov money to put it right. Profit vs people.

Ffs... “and other media which followed suit”. 🙄

Time for those ACTUALLY responsible to dodge blame by throwing the Fire Service under the bus. The fire service didn’t start the fire.....the fire service didn’t fit unsafe cladding....the fire service risked their own lives to save people !

Colour everyone surprised. Blaming the firefighters who put their very lives on the line to save people at Grenfell, rather than the greedy developers and landlords and their friends in government, who shirked their responsibilities and got people killed there.

bbc5live cant stop telling us the (from a particular section of the report) that the fire brigade did wrong. Where is the leaked part of the document which tells us why the cladding was allowed to be fitted. Another cover up by the BBC GrenfellTower

This was unprecedented and quick decisions had to be made. Blame whoever clad the building with substandard materials not those heroically risking their own lives

Like they knew about that awful flammable material! Blame the builders/installers and manufacturers of this product! NOT LFB! notLFBfault

What went wrong, What can be better. This is what good companies do to prevent problems that happened in the past from happening in the future. If you stop trying to improve, you will fail.

Ridiculous! The ones at fault are the local Tory council failure to maintain fire doors and safety devices otherwise fire service advice would be correct!

Disgusting the blame is getting passed from the fat cats to the firefighters! They done what they were supposed to do and MORE! The cladding shouldn’t have been on the building in the first place!
