At the time of her death, Alice had waited 1,023 days for a first appointment with gender specialists

More than 13,000 people are waiting for an appointment at the London GIC alone and the backlog is growing, with the number of monthly referrals outstripping first appointments by a factor of six to one.

“I do not want another parent to live the rest of their life with their child in a jar on the mantlepiece, instead of in their warm embrace. “Alice felt strongly that she would feel better if she was progressing with her care… she had moments of hope which were dashed by delays,” she said. Dr Litman said: “It did not seem that adult services took her self-harm history, and the impact of gender-affirming treatment delays on her emotional wellbeing, seriously enough.“Alice was suddenly cast out of care because she did not meet the adult threshold for intervention, despite having been identified as needing support the week before.
