The 40-year-old's lawyer described him as a self-confessed doomsday “prepper” who was lawfully storing food and minerals in readiness for potential catastrophe or breakdown in government

Suspected upskirting videos were discovered on a phone belonging to a man under investigation for allegedly storing guns and trying to manufacture explosives at his South Belfast home, a court heard today.

Chemical substances and dozens of mobile phones were recovered during military-led searches at the property, according to police. A previous court heard quantities of potassium nitrate, sulphur and corn syrup which detectives believe could be used to make explosives were recovered. As he mounted an application for bail, Belfast Magistrates’ Court heard tests are still being carried out to establish the legal status of the seized material.

District Judge George Conner heard the alleged recordings were made at bus stops, in shops or on the streets of Belfast on dates between April 29 and May 14 this year. Bail was opposed amid claims the defendant poses a risk to the public and only stopped the recordings because he had been arrested. Mr Steele insisted, however, that the alleged interpretation of upskirting is disputed.
