US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died of cancer aged 87. The veteran lawyer died of metastatic pancreatic cancer at her home in Washington DC on Friday evening surrounded by family.
Just days before her death, as her strength waned, Ginsburg dictated this statement to her granddaughter Clara Spera: ‘My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.’Ginsburg – the second woman to serve as a US Supreme Court Justice – was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2009. In June this year she revealed that the disease had returned, and had progressed to stage four – the most serious type of cancer.
US Supreme Court lawmakers issue the final ruling on cases disputed in other courts, and have made landmark decisions with far-reaching implications including the legalization of abortion and gay marriage in the United States.The registered Democrat previously served as an appeals court judge, achieving her immense success despite facing sexism when she began her legal career during the 1960s.
She became the ACLU’s general counsel the following year, and helped take on 300 gender discrimination cases by 1974. A film based on her career, On The Basis of Sex, was released on Christmas Day 2018.
