Study finds 'very low' number of coronavirus patients are smokers

Of 441 hospitalised COVID-19 patients in the study, 5% were active smokers. But rates are 24% in the Italian population, suggesting some sort of protection. However, more smokers succumbed to the disease - half compared to 35%.

That is a misleading graph, since 86.3% of Americans are non-smokers. So if COVID were neutral, you'd expect 86.3% of COVID patients to be non-smokers. That's about what's observed.

I read a study that said the virus is attaching to ace receptor sites in the lungs ( attacking the whole ace system then) Smokers have damage to those sites. Also explains why HTN and DM are such high risk factors as they take meds that inhibit ace response
