The Highway Code is essential for keeping drivers safe while on the UK’s roads. However, Compare the Market’s latest survey has revealed that just over two-thirds of drivers are confident that they know all the regulations.
Drivers in Plymouth were the most knowledgeable on their Highway Code, answering half of the questions in the quiz correctly. Interestingly, the city also sees the second-lowest number of collisions of all cities analysed, at just 371 per year. The research also revealed the scenarios in which UK drivers don’t realise they can be fined. Almost half of UK drivers are unaware they can be fined for flashing headlights to warn of a police presence.
A quarter of motorists could also be at risk of a fine for using bus lanes incorrectly. Driving through a bus lane during its period of operation is a breach of rule 141 of the Highway Code and can lead to a fine of £160 in London, or £80 in areas outside of London.
