Steve Wright hosts his final BBC Radio 2 afternoon show

Steve Wright has signed off from his final daily BBC Radio 2 programme after 23 years as a fixture in the station's weekday schedules.

"Corny though it sounds, I quite like the way that we've all helped each other get through some of our ongoing problems together - the pandemic, the financial downturns, the ups and downs of life in the UK. Sometimes it's been very difficult for everybody. When the end of his "big show" was announced in July, the 68-year-old revealed that the head of Radio 2 had told him she wanted to do "something different" in his slot. He said: "That's OK. I understand that."

"Please do listen to Scott Mills and Sara Cox when they take over afternoons. They are both brilliant broadcasters and I truly wish them well when they start."Wright made his name on Radio 1 with the original incarnation of Steve Wright in the Afternoon from 1981, bringing energy, comedy and his trusty posse - and pioneering the "zoo" format on the UK airwaves.

So sad that you getting rid of the iconic Steve Wright from his slot on radio two. Even more sad that you are being replaced by the awful Scott Mills

Boom radio Steve 👍🏻

He was dreadful, talking over the music, singing. Thank goodness he’s gone

A huge loss.

Are you kiddin? (No G) !!

Billsboy9 Defund the anti Steve Wright BBC!

Bloody BBC

Was past his sell by date on Radio 1 in the 80s

I have been listening to Steve off and mostly on for the best part of 40 years, and I am saddened that he has stepped down from the afternoon show, but heartened that he will still be doing Sunday Love Songs and Serious Jockin' on podcast.

LEGENDARY

We need the BBC to speed up it's demise and getting rid of all the white straight men is a great start.

Won’t ever have to hear ‘serious jocking’ ever again. Hallelujah

Not before time he’s wasted my radio 2 ears for years. 💩💩💩💩🦃🦃🦃🦃

I hope Stormzie takes his place .🥴

What a legend, ruined and thrown away by today's woke culture cancelling mouth breathers at the BBC

Steve is a legend and a safe pair of hands on the radio. More and more reasons to switch to commercial radio.

Another legend bites the dust on the BBC no point getting a TV license anymore

Okay this dude clearly thinks he’s Steven Seagal & believe me that’s not cool.

Looks like Ali G

Great show Steve. Look forward to SWITA popping up on a new station in the new year.

Steve Wright. A wonderful, funny and sincere broadcaster.

Why do they have to change things, his show was the only one I listened to. Going to miss you Steve, tuned in almost everyday since the very first show.

More like 33 years

He's gone !

Grew up listening to Steve on R1 and followed him to R2 , a sad day , we still have Sunday mornings though don't we ? For me the addition of Tim Smith weakened the show

Followed Wrighty since early Radio 1 days and since he joined Radio 2. A superb broadcaster. Now listening to BoomRadioUK permanently from now onwards..!

Ken Bruce must be shitting himself

Past his sell by date years ago. Peddling the same show from 1981! Time for a change.

Non stop oldie my Arse

Racism at the BBC is rife. Sorry to see you go Steve.

Thank you Mr Wright for all your energy and the excellent radio shows you have done

Hate the corrupted, dishonest Beh Beh Ceh, but did enjoy Wrighty shows over the years ,Snp1greens2 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💙

I'd say good riddance but then you have someone equally bad replacing him

Im 60 and cant sleep, I'm very shocked to see this😮😢😢🌹🌹🌹you will be missed... Thankyou 🌺

Thanks Steve

Will be missed, a lot of years in my life.

Our school bus in Dunoon Scotland played Steve Wright back in 1987-88..’another true story!’ Thank you Steve. You and the posse transported us to a bigger world.

😭

Why is he going. Mr Angry. Pearly.

Wūkèlán shì yīgè zìyóu, mínzhǔ, zhèngfǔ qīnglián, bù fǔbài de guójiā ma Is Ukraine a free, democratic, clean government and non-corrupt country?

No more serious jockin 😞

Thanks Steve for the memories

It just won’t be the same without him!

DJ's!!!!!! EASY LIFE!!!!

The bbc like top gear shooting itself in the foot , shut down the BBC

Bullied out by the woke Beeb

To be fair he has had his time and done a fantastic job of it! (Never fade away just stop at the top!) Ken B needs to be next, nice guy great DJ but he was on air when I was in secondary school I’m 52 now …..Time to change the record! These Gigs don’t last for ever!

bye enjoy the retirement money xxx

Worst days work R2 has ever done . Shame on you

Good

Steve Wright has been doing the same tired show for years. He talks over all the tracks, is not funny and I’m happy for something new.

Needed to happen, happy retirement Steve W

Steve Wright enjoying his semi retirement SteveWrightInTheAfternoon SteveWright

Steve Wright has been pretty much the radio of my life. From Diamond Geezer Mr Spoon in the 80s/90s to driving me home throughout my teaching career. You'll know what you're missing when it's gone. Feel sad driving home today. Thanks Steve. Sad Drivin! SteveWrightInTheAfternoon

Such a shame today. Really poor decision by the BBC and not what the radio listeners want. You got to listen to your audience. Steve Wright a true gent and professional to the end of his show. I'll be giving radio 2 a miss now after 1200.

Radio stations will be banging Steve’s door down to get him to sign up . It’s not often this kind of talent becomes available .

Disgraceful. I wouldn’t mind but you’ve done it so many times before BBCRadio2 Thing is. We consume media in different ways now so when he returns on another station it’s game over for you… stevewright SteveWrightInTheAfternoon

Brilliant show. Sad to see this go

Sorry, he *was* good but has become stale and predictable. I don't need someone reading me the news then saying 'you're up to date'. Maybe a change is overdue, but some people can't accept it. He'll pop up on some commercial station I'm sure

So many of these 80s & 90s DJs have just gone on for what seems like forever, could do with more of them retiring. Happy retirement Mr Spoon.

Will miss he qlot. Tim no chance but Steve was fantastic

A sad loss to radio 2 afternoons

Just another bloke leaving his job? No one gives a flying fuck when I left my job no one cared either…… he is no hero, just a bloke getting paid to talk shite and play crap music, probably gets paid more for 2hrs a day than the Prime Minister does defundthebbc

I remember him starting on Radio 1.

End of an era for BBC Radio, loved to listen in right from the days of Radio 1, best show on radio for ages

For a second there I thought this was Steven Seagal

R.I.P Radio 2.

Wish it was Jeremy vine

That’s Steven Seagal

Such a lovely man who has given us much joy and laughter over the years- he will be missed

Thank god

Yeah but Which POC to replace him?

Sad to see him go, but was time for a change. Scott Mills will freshen it up abit.

His show had got a bit long in the tooth…… Not sure Scott Mills is the right person to carry the afternoon show tho…..

Steve is a legend

He’ll be missed ☹️

He was great in the 80’s

sad I'm so angry, I'll throw the phone down! 😉

Crazy decision to stop the show. Steve is a professional and could teach many of the radio 2 DJ's how to do it. I am switching off and very sad to see the show go. Another bad decision BBC!!

BBCRadio2 afternoon ratings will tank because of this.

I’ve listened to him for years. Him and Simon Bates were my favourite jocks in the 80’s and 90’s.

Hope he goes to Greatest Hits radio!

sad to see you go but thanks for the memories xx

Always thought he was well overrated. Loved the sound of his own voice too much & not giving at all

And he will be replaced by some talentless goon to fit in with their agenda 🤦🏼‍♂️

Another decision they'll regret.

All the best Steve, you were bloody fantastic SteveWrightInTheAfternoon

He's a good bloke. Very intelligent and has managed to remain a traditionally light pre-watershed radio DJ without becoming a Smashy & Nicey type, except when he wanted to in a tongue-in-cheek way.

We’ll miss you in the afternoons, Steve Wright SteveWrightInTheAfternoon stevewright
