Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram has given more details of how Liverpool city centre could be completely transformed - with a rebuilt Central Station connected to Lime Street via an underground tunnel.
The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority wants to address the capacity issues at the hugely busy Liverpool Central, while also looking to create a 'once-in-a-generation' opportunity to redefine the wider area around the station and deliver 'transformational place-based regeneration.' "We've got assets here that nowhere in the country has and Manchester does too. When you pull them together, that's where the magic happens."
"Instead of asking how we squeeze a few more people in, we are asking how we can redevelop Central Station, connect it to Lime Street and you would then have the ability to bring people straight into the very heart of the city centre. And the mayor wants to go further in terms of his ambitions. Confirming that the plans would see trains from Manchester arriving directly at Central Station, he added: "We want to run them as well. Why can't Merseyrail be the operator of new lines running between Liverpool and Manchester? A Liverpool to Manchester railway company gives us the sway to think about doing things completely differently.
The plans are ambitious - but we have similar plans before. So afterwards, Alistair Houghton from the Echo's sister site BusinessLive quizzed the speakers on whether these plans would actually happen this time. Mayor Burnham said in this press conference that the Government had "confirmed" £17bn funding was available, and that Labour was also supportive of the plans. Now, he said, the North West had to prove it had a vision to spend that cash well.
The mayors said they hoped the new Liverpool-Manchester line could one day connect to a new line from Manchester through the Pennines to Bradford, Leeds and beyond. And they said the plans could also help create more space for freight services in the North West - potentially allowing more cargoes from the Port of Liverpool to be transported by rail.Another transport initiative that Mayor Rotheram has spoken about is the idea of rapid-transit.
