Taking the Elgin Marbles from occupied Greece was like an American taking the Eiffel Tower from Paris when the city was under German occupation, Stephen Fry has said

The writer and broadcaster said the British Museum’s arguments for keeping the marble sculptures in the face of continued requests from Greece amounted to: “We got it legally from the Turks . . . who were an occupying force”.to Greece, where he predicted they would be welcomed by two million people in the streets of Athens.

Why only Greece. Return all the stolen artefacts from former colonies like Africa and Indian subcontinent. Be classy 😜

The Eiffel Tower comparison is a foolish one that bears little scrutiny.

Somewhat perverse, given that in 1801 the end of the 1000 year old Ottoman occupation was hardly self evident.

Is he calling the Turks Nazis?

If Stephen Fry talks, you just listen and cherish the opportunity. And he's right, by the way.

It would be nice to get them returned to Athens. The site needs to be maintained, and they could use support in keeping them in their native home.

You could also be classy and hand back Irish artifacts that were stolen.

So True. X
