, included 165,411 patients who had been put on statins to cut their risk of developing heart disease by lowering their cholesterol to a healthy level.
Experts say the study findings are somewhat limited because they cannot prove that patients who do not respond well to statins will necessarily fare worse as a consequence. Other factors - like smoking and obesity - also raise cardiovascular risk.Researcher Dr Stephen Weng, from Nottingham University, said:"Our research has shown that in almost half of patients prescribed statins, they are very effective and offer significant protection against cardiovascular disease.
He said:"We have to develop better ways to understand differences between patients and how we can tailor more effective treatment for those millions of patients who are simply blanket-prescribed statins." "If you have been prescribed statins, you should continue to take them regularly, as prescribed. If you have any concerns you should discuss your medication with your GP. There are now other drugs available to help lower cholesterol levels, and it may be that another type of medication will be an effective addition or alternative for you."
Is that almost 50% or half?
The question is, why does everyone believe we need to reduce our cholesterol levels? Do people realise the so called “bad” LDL has different particle sizes, not all LDL is bad for us, it’s an important part of our biology!
Stay off sugar and processed carbs. Eat veg, fish and meat and then get off your lazy arse and exercise. Then educate yourself in what you need to do to get off and avoid being on prescription medication (legal drugs).
Why do they not just eat less, cut back on curry and kebabs, less time down your local gulping it down. lol
Still more effective than homeopathic medicines, which don’t work for 2 out of 2 people.
I've been taking them for nearly 10 years with no side effects. I can no longer have grapefruit juice as it counteracts the effects and you might as well not bother taking them. (OK once in a blue moon though). Also my statins must be taken before I go to bed to work efficiently.
And an 'on the cheap' one size fits all NHSuk doesnt either....fund it properly and stop selling out to the highest bidder
What if you have split personalities? Asking for a friend...
That is because most people who take them want to carry on living the same life style, and the tablets are swimming against the tide. They are meant to help people, not do it all for them!
Agree with most people's comments here. Diet and exercise not even mentioned in this report.
Million people
Totally misleading.
.MMFlint - NEXT SCARY FILM!!
takes the BBC until now to find this out? I new about this 11 years ago
Pointless study without looking at the diet and patients lifestyle choices. Continuing to eat a poor diet, smoking, alcohol consumption and daily activity levels are all relevant
