St Johnstone have sacked manager Steven MacLean after a 4-0 defeat against St Mirren left them at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership. The club also parted ways with Liam Craig. Alex Cleland will take charge temporarily. Saints are yet to win a game this season and sit five points adrift at the bottom of the table.

MacLean’s final game in charge was a 4-0 defeat against St Mirren on Saturday afternoon and that was a result which left Saints rooted to the foot of the Scottish Premiership.

The Perth club also announced that they had parted company with Liam Craig. Alex Cleland has been tasked with first team duties for now. MacLean took interim charge towards the end of last season after Callum Davidson’s departure and then officially took the reins on a three-year contract. A disappointing League Cup campaign - including a 4-0 defeat against Stirling Albion and further losses to Stenhousemuir and Ayr - was backed up by a slow Premiership start.

Saints are yet to win a game in the league this season and sit five points adrift at the bottom of the table after nine games.
