The UK's first openly gay sports minister said he was determined to make the gesture even though the world's football governing body has warned players they could be booked for making political protests.

Mr Andrew, who is also an equalities minister, said that as a gay man he is in a"unique position" to send a message of solidarity to those LGBTQ+ fans who did not feel comfortable travelling to Qatar for the event. Some football teams - including England and Wales - were preparing to wear the armband during matches in a show of solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.Football associations subsequently backed down.

He added:"This is an incredibly important tournament for international football... of course they want to progress as far as they can. For them to be silenced is deeply unfair."Speaking about FIFA, Mr Andrew continued:"Two weeks ago they wrote to everybody to say just concentrate on the football and don't do the politics."Well I'm sorry, that is just not an acceptable position. It's not sustainable. And I think there are serious questions for FIFA to answer.

"This has been a decision I've thought long and hard about because it is a very deeply personal decision," he said. "I have a responsibility to go there and see for myself that is actually what has been delivered on the ground. And if it isn't in any way then to challenge that."'England will want to stay unbeaten'

Who the hell cares. I just want to watch the football.

Sick of virtue signallers it would be novel if people actually ran the country and made decisions.

Well, at least ONE held enough conviction to wear the damned thing out in public in that country. Let's see how this goes...

Watching it on TV in his hotel room then....🤔

Brave

It's so brave when people risk nothing for a cause. So brave.. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Is even one person who purportedly cares about this cause willing to actually put themselves in the firing line and take a real risk? Anyone? 🤷🏻‍♂️ This constant virtue signalling disgusts me.

In other news slightly more important than the one love story … Mrs McNally that lives across the street from me puts her wheelie bins out every other Wednesday … an eye witness that doesn’t want to be named said hers is the one with the Domino’s Pizza sticker on it.

🙈

Stunning and brave

Weren't we told you get arrested and killed just for being gay in Qatar? Tatchel went there and made a scene - no dead or arrested Andrew - apparently in Qatar - not dead or arrested Just saying..

Hopefully, he's already been arrested, thrown onto a cargo plane, and airdropped back into the sty he crawled out of...

More political posturing.

Attention seeking again…

Just want a minute of promoting oneself

Will he wear it proudly walking into to stadium, or will he slyly bring it out of his pocket and slide it onto his arm once in his seat? Either way, having flagged it up on social media, they’ll be watching him and don’t be surprised if he gets his collar felt

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Why?

Hypocrites

Another nob ….

🥱🤣 it’s there culture leave it out FIFAWorldCupQatar2022

FIFAcom FIFAWorldCup here is were the problem really is Qatar are who they are & in someways have took the brunt of this but when you host a world event it should be inclusive to everyone & you as the organisers should make sure it is. Qatar should have been told or not host WC

Will you be covering his arrest live? I look forward to laughing like hell.

StuartAndrew Maybe all the Qataris should wear an armband in support of their cause…. FreePalestine Call the UK out for it’s migrant abuses at Manston. What happened to respectfully agree to disagree for good diplomacy.

💤💤💤💤💤

And I'm wearing one to have a piss in a minute.

stone him

No respect at all for another persons country…. Don’t go if you feel that strongly about it 😡.

StuartAndrew You do realise this is extremely offensive to the Islam faith ? The equivalent to this in return would be for the DJ in a gay bar to start playing the Islamic call to prayer. Their beliefs are ancient. Live and let live. Your argument isn’t with them!

😂😂

Provocation. Why wear it in Qatar ? Wear it where you are in London, how does that sound ?

They won’t let him in and he will promptly then take it off

Why are these guys too too thirsty for ATTN. This thirst for attention really makes me question their whole movement. Appears more like selling a product.

One Love Love is Love Anyone is entitled to Love Even....

Best support would have been not to go , oh well £££££

🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

He should be kicked out of the stadium and detained for breaking hosting country law 💪 by the way, is he gay?

So brave

So fukin what 🤡

Stop pushing this garbage!!!

What would you expect from fascists ? They cant even do the bare minimum and respect a country’s religion and culture? Its like nazi germany when people were forced to wear nazi armband. But now in a gay way.

If the football governing bodies were that concerned thier respective teams should have boycotted the competition. All this is just pathetic virtue signalling.

No one CARE

Stunning & brave, although imagine the message he'd have sent by refusing to go eh.

🤮🤮🤮

Oh do give it a rest 🤦‍♀️ It’s Football!
