Spencer Matthews has revealed the heartbreaking reason he's joining Channel 4’s The Great Celebrity Bake Off For Stand Up To Cancer. The Made In Chelsea star is going into the tent with Jodie Whittaker, Paloma Faith and Munya Chawawa. Spencer’s uncle Bob died of cancer many years ago and his loss affected him and his family.
Spencer claims he isn’t a natural baker, but he did make the final of Celebrity MasterChef in 2018 and he has a competitive streak. “I was a runner-up on MasterChef,” he says. “I was baking chocolate fondants very late into the night just before the finals. I made 40 chocolate fondants in one night – just to give you a taste of the competitive nature there.” Spencer also bakes with his kids, but fears Vogue may dispute this claim. “We have baked with the kids at home,” says Spencer.
Facing judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith in the tent was the biggest test for Spencer and he admits he melted under Paul’s gaze. “Paul and Prue are icons,” he says. “Prue was just so wonderfully kind of warm all the time – though the honesty and the brutality of But, while the judges gave him the collywobbles, hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding were on hand with hugs and plenty of support. “I feel very looked after by Alison,” he says. “She is just a darling – she’s already a national treasure. She brings so much positive energy to the tent and really helps kind of cut through that tension that one might feel if they were really competitive.”
