Nine games in 29 days will stand between Southampton and their season finale at Leeds United in May. The Saints have had their postponed Preston North End clash rearranged for Tuesday, April 16, leaving them with a mammoth April to conquer.
The meeting with the Deepdale outfit was called off last week because of an industrial fire in the area that made it too dangerous for the game to go ahead. The result is another midweek game in April, despite the fact Southampton have just started a 20-day period with no matches. Their weekend clash with Leicester City had been rearranged because of the Foxes’ FA Cup commitments and then the international break means another fortnight off. Russell Martin’s side are virtually left with a game every three days between March 29 and April 27.That gauntlet includes visits to Portman Road and King Power Stadium. They will then get one clear week before heading to Elland Road for the final game of the season.
It remains to be seen how much is riding on that LS11 endgame. Southampton’s Championship promotion charge faltered last month when they lost three matches. Two goal-laden wins in March have steadied the ship and they are six points off the top two with one game in hand. Winning that game in hand would put six points between the top four with nine games left to play. While Southampton and Leicester take three-week breaks from league action, Leeds have the chance to go top of the league if they beat Millwall by more than one goal on Sunday.
