The letter read: “I deeply regret that I am unable personally to hand you the award you have so well earned'

A Northamptonshire soldier who fought with his bare hands received a letter from King George VI for his bravery. As part of a running series, the Irthlingborough Historical Society has kindly provided Northants Live with biographies of local soldiers.

Accompanying the medal was a letter signed by King George VI, which read: “I deeply regret that I am unable personally to hand you the award you have so well earned. I now send it to you with my congratulations and best wishes for your future happiness.”At NorthantsLive we're more than just news.

He trained in Southern Rhodesia and South Africa before being posted to Northern Ireland. After many operations as Second Pilot, he became captain of a new crew before being commissioned in January 1944.
