SNP leadership contender Kate Forbes has sparked a backlash after admitting that she would have voted against the introduction of same-sex marriage in Scotland.
“I would have voted, as a matter of conscience, along the lines of mainstream teaching in most major religions that marriage is between a man and a woman,” she told“But I would have respected and defended the democratic choice that was made. It is legal right now and I am a servant of democracy, I am not a dictator.”
Former SNP MSP Marco Biagi, who oversaw the introduction of same-sex marriage, said: “We campaigned long for equal marriage. As minister I signed the legislation enacting it. I was witness at the first ceremony. SNP councillor Lloyd Melville said that the party risked losing the trust of a “generation of voters” if it elected Ms Forbes as leader.
SNP MP Hannah Bardell, one of the party’s numerous gay elected lawmakers, offered a balanced take, responding: “I have a level of respect for her being so open and direct about her views.” “She might even have recognized that our values of love and a desire to live free from discrimination are very much aligned.”
She looks about 12. But is more bigoted than a 12 yo.
She can believe whatever she likes, but legally, she has to accept the rights of *all* married couples, be they hetero, homo or trans.
