But when Jimmy rolls into a therapy appointment the next morning, the twist is that he is not the patient but the therapist.
A montage of clients establishes that Jimmy is not exactly enamoured with his job: his patients’ issues are presented as boring, selfish or unworthy of his attention. As a result, he decides to go rogue and tell them what he really thinks, proudly declaring himself “a psychological vigilante” . In practice, this involves taking a young soldier with anger management issues to MMA training and giving a woman in an emotionally abusive marriage an ultimatum: “Leave him or I’m done being your therapist”. It doesn’t take a medical professional to know that this is a deeply unethical approach and yet, the show does not seem to think the same.Shrinking
isn’t especially interested in its consequences. Instead, it focuses on the story of a man who ultimately needs to discover that the best way to help others is to help himself and therefore, his bad behaviour is tolerated to an unbelievable degree by those around him. Surely his upbeat colleague Gaby and his boss Paul, the aforementioned grumpy Ford, would be shutting this down the instant they got a whiff of such unprofessionalism? Would Alice really thank him for finally attending one of her football games after it descended into a violent brawl because of his maverick methods?
