Family of dying teen given 'racist' code by police

BBC South

She told the BBC her son was affectionally known as "Shelly" and described his "amazing personality" and "wicked sense of humour". "By then, I'm asking Sheldon, 'What's up?' The phone went dead and within about 10 seconds I had a FaceTime call from Sheldon... he had blood all over his face."Mrs Lewcock said her boy had an "amazing personality" and "wicked sense of humour"

"It indicates that the person has to be black and of colour, and normally you would associate bananas with a monkey. That's the association that I got."It's a serious matter. It might only seem like one word but it's one word that has affected this family and the community as a whole."

Can't expect anything different from the police nothing surprises me anymore.

Unbelievable! How they laughed back at the station and passed on this hilarity to their banter buddies. Now who’s bananas?🤔

Someone can smell money me thinks

Those code words are normally set by the hospital

The only racist here is her🤷🏻‍♂️ she’s white and has connected a banana with what? No other person would think ‘racism’ unless they were having racist thoughts. Nasty woman.

'Banana'

Met police?

In my day, a list of code words was kept in the HQ control room. You asked for and were assigned the next word on the list. No exceptions (thus, no complaints). Clearly, such a procedure is not favoured in TVP.

BBC sensationalising statement again Codeword of name of fruit given by police. Family after time decide they think it had racial overtones, no confirmation but BBC happy to stir tensions.

As if the police don't have enough demoralising issues they have to deal with the BBC shxt stirring more making issues where non exist🇬🇧🙏🏻💙💙💙💙

Seriously?! Maybe they didn’t get the outcome they wanted so punishing the police. Thx 4 wasting tax payers’ money. Focus on getting justice. Seriously pisses me off. An ex-friend overreacted when I called her a cheeky monkey, the same name I give my son. Creating drama from nowt

They better not use pearl or glacier with me or I'll be all over it.

that is not a 'racist' code word and is often given to people as a code for a cry for help. Some people will find 'r' in anything. i have been told off for asking for a black coffee before ! i should've asked for a coffee without milk.

FFS not everything in life is racist

This is exhausting

Is anyone surprised by the police anymore?!

fruit is racist now,who knew 🙄

'To visit my son he had a password, which was banana, which I didn't really think much of it at the time and it wasn't until after I realised I could get money that I became offended.'

What a load of bull, surely nobody is going to believe this story let alone waste time publishing it? Oh wait, Hello BBC. This country is pathetic

Who else can 'smell' a claim brewing here 🙄

how easy it is to play the race card these days. And the soft, fuzzy bearded namby pambies will suck it up and revel in it

When my brother (a white man) was seriously assaulted years ago, police set up a p/word that was also Banana. Bemused, I asked the officer why. He said he has to set so many up, he goes through different fruit. Others use car makes, others use country names etc.. It’s a non issue

It’s astonishing the level some will stoop to in order to get a free lunch.

I just thought banana was a fruit

Constable, get yourself round all the local supermarkets and seize all the bananas : they're evidence of a serious racial crime

Black tea / coffee and brown toast will be out soon

😆😆 how pathetic

Just another lowlife trying to scam some compensation 🙄

Nice inverted commas when outlining the story, as even the BBC struggle with this utter tosh.

The people (like his family for instance) who hear the word banana and immediately think black man are the racists.

Bullshit
