presented its Spring/Summer 2021 collection in a socially-distanced and minimally-attended runway show, staged at the brand’s headquarters in Tokyo.
True to form, the label hasn’t revealed much about the collection, simply offering a few words on the theme for the season: dissonance. “The human brain always looks for harmony and logic,” it said in a statement. “When harmony is denied, where there is no logic, when there is dissonance ... a powerful moment is created which leads you to feel an inner turmoil and a tension ... that can lead to find positive change and progress.
This sentiment is reflected in the clothes through the use of “unexpected” and constrasting fabrics which are brought together in illogical ways. Bathed in red light – which itself suggests turmoil – these fabrics include PVC, a Mickey Mouse print and polkadot pattern, evoking chaos, yes, but also a playfulness.
Separately, other members of the Comme des Garçons family of designers – Junya Watanabe and Noir Kei Ninomiya – have also debuted their Spring/Summer 2021 collections, the former reproducing “the costumes worn by the stars in my memories”, the latter citing no theme.
