Second coronavirus wave plus winter flu ‘risks bringing NHS to a grinding halt’

A SECOND wave of the coronavirus combined with winter flu could “bring the NHS to a grinding halt”, experts have claimed.

The group is now calling on the government to bring forward the usual workplace vaccine programmes as it believes there could be a second peak of Covid-19 in the winter season. Those most at risk when it comes to developing severe flu symptoms include people with asthma, cancer or people who have had an organ transplant. So far in the UK over 43,000 people have died from Covid-19 and the virus has put a huge strain on NHS resources.

Professor Andrew Goddard, president of the RCP, said: "With lockdown further loosening this weekend for many, there is no time to waste in ensuring that the NHS and social care are prepared for the very real potential of future Covid-19 waves. The RCP said a reservist support list of staff who can help should be produced in case the NHS gets overwhelmed.

NHS test and trace system unable to reach quarter of infected peopleThe government’s contact-tracing programme failed to reach a quarter of people who tested positive for Covid-19 in England between 18 and 25 June, the latest figures show. Only 75 per cent of the I'm surprised. Beyond that, I'm shocked. No, just kidding, nobody expected anything else from that bunch of incompetent morons we call our Government. If this is supposed to be the world beating system to control the virus going forward, why is Leicester in lockdown with several other towns/cities near lockdown? Shouldn’t the system be on top of this? Another hopeless, pathetic effort by the gov
