A casual visitor to Scotland might assume that the Gaelic language is thriving, with every police car carrying the word poileas and every ambulance ambaileans. Yet in the few places where it is spoken, the language is in a profound, potentially terminal crisis.
Hopefully not!
More chance this rag will be deed very soon
omg, the answer is so simple...MAKE SCOTTISH GAELIC A COMPULSORY SUBJECT IN SCHOOLS!!!

Since when was Welsh a Gaelic language?
its a pity that people are continuing to keep the Grauniad alive, despite it's contining lack of accuracy.....
It's terribly sad, but languages undergo natural selection, like genes. The languages which Gaelic itself supplanted disappeared because Gaelic was more useful for communication. English inevitably supplants it in turn. It can't be reversed.
392k active learners of Scots Gaelic on duolingo today from a standing start on St Andrews day last year. The course is completely FREE and can be used by schools, government, MSPs, young people, old people, anyone, anywhere.
CountDankulaTV do you think bringing 3 million Chinese imports will effect this?
Will it aye!

Shite. Next BS story. Will it be about Richard Leonard becoming FM? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Newspapers could die out sooner than that.
I'd like to learn but it's not well resourced outside UK. SabhalMorOstaig online is beyond the means of many and bbcalba can't be accessed legally (duolingo is good, of course). Opening up the language outside Scotland gives millions more potential speakers. Think S4C.
The Brits trying to wipe out Gaelic culture just as they tried to do in another century...despicable.
Someone at university should start recording all that remains
But presumably based on the story regarding duolingo from January (this might be reversed?
When an American news outlet is much more positive towards Cymraeg than an English daily - diolch yn fawr cnni
On a more positive note, and not diminishing the importance of reversing these downward trends, if anyone is interested in learning Gaelic I put together a thread with a few useful resources as I too began learning this language:
ScotlandsUnico1 😢
Hi there SeverinCarrell, thank you for the article. I wonder if you could please just re-check your data on the Welsh language in your piece to see if it is correct? You say that only 'about half' of the '500K' Welsh speakers speak Welsh 'routinely'. 1/2

Why don’t the Scottish government take a note out of the welsh text book and make it part of the National curriculum in the school’s.
steady now steady we close too civilising the savages steady
How did this get past the Editor? 🥴Welsh people speak Welsh, not Gaelic! 🏴
Why is this seen as a problem? Artificially propping up dying languages is a bizarre waste of money. Surely we should be encouraging the use of a consistent, global method of communication, rather than trying to erect barriers?
We Welsh are such a clever lot. Not only do 600,000 of us speak Welsh but according to this article another 500,000 speak Gaelic 😉. accuracy
Interesting to know how much is spent annually on Gaelic.
This has been true of Gaelic since the 1970s. People can chose to keep it alive.
Don’t believe this. From what I’ve seen it’s alive and well in Scotland
Not the Native language btw. Than would be a form of Brittonic
That’s what they said about Irish
Noooo!
That is so sad. Perhaps take a lesson from the Welsh who are ensuring their language continues.
BabbelUSA duolingo Get on it.
Good
Time to rid yourself of the English and Northern Ireland. Be independent and stay in the 🇪🇺
But...but it’s all over the Police cars and road signs at a cost of millions to the taxpayer. How could this have been allowed to happen?
Oh dear. How sad .
