A Scots cop has gone on trial accused of assaulting a “frightened” man with his police baton by smacking him on the legs as he lay face down on the ground

. Constable Jack Brownlee is also facing a charge of culpable and reckless conduct after allegedly chasing after a runaway motor at high speeds for around 20 minutes despite not being trained in pursuit driving.

The now retired officer said that despite the man being “completely compliant”, fellow officer Brownlee had struck him on the legs just seconds later. He explained: “As I alighted from the car, I could see a passenger trying to squeeze through to the driver’s seat. “He struck him on the legs at the back of his calves.” Asked if he said anything to his fellow officer, Constable Greig, who was kneeling next to the complainer, added: “I said ‘what are you doing? He’s not the driver. He’s a witness’ or something along those lines.”
