In just three months, volunteers found thousands of bottles and cans, crisp packets and cigarette ends and hundreds of dog poos around Scotland's waterways.

A shocking 20,000 bits of litter around Scotland’s rivers and waterways were found by volunteers in just three months, a national survey has found.That was followed by plastic pieces , snack packets , drinks cans , polystyrene pieces and cigarettes .

The citizen science report comprised 185 volunteer surveys along 26 rivers and waterways in 20 local authority areas across Scotland. A controversial proposed Scottish Government scheme collapsed last year after it was blocked by Westminster. Top news stories today “I’d like to thank everyone who supported this data drive, from our tireless volunteers to our partners and funders who have shared and echoed our message and vision.“We need our governments to commit to tackling single-use packaging litter through improved Extended Producer Responsibility regulations and to ensure a Deposit Return Scheme is not further delayed.
