A judge told Arran Swift he would continue to pose a serious danger to the public if he was allowed his freedom.

A sadistic bully who smashed his girlfriend's pet hamster to death with a hammer during a sustained campaign of abuse has been made subject to a Lifelong Restriction Order.

Lord Arthurson said reports showed that Swift had "sadistic" tendencies and scored highly on a test to assess psychopathic behaviour. He said: "You demonstrated extreme violence, controlling and somewhat sadistic behaviour towards your victim. You have used different aliases in relationships. "You have found it impossible to take responsibility for your behaviour. You have had eight previous partners and have shown concerning behaviour towards seven of them.

He imposed a three years and nine months punishment period, but told Swift the lifelong restriction order meant he may never be released from jail. Swift, from Fife, was also made subject to a lifelong non-harassment order. The court was told that Swift was already subject to two other non-harassment orders, had served 19 previous prison terms and was on a community payback order at the time of the latest offence.

Officers found the body of the animal, along with blood splatters where it had been thrown against a wall and a hammer covered in blood and hair. Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court heard the 37-year-old carried out a litany of abuse after entering into a relationship with the woman in 2018 or 2019.
