Three sailors stranded on a tiny Pacific Ocean island were rescued after spelling out 'HELP' using palm leaves. The US Navy and Coast Guard operation turned into a family reunion as they saved the trio. The men had been stranded on the uninhabited Pikelot Atoll after their boat was damaged.

Three sailors have been rescued from a tiny Pacific Ocean island after spelling out " HELP " in the sand using palm leaves after a week of being stranded.

After taking damage to their boat, they managed to scramble ashore on the tiny uninhabited Pikelot, but their radio ran out of battery before they could call for help. Officials have said it is difficult to overstate how remote Pikelot is. The island is part of the Federated States of Micronesia, a Pacific nation between the Philippines and Hawaii that is made up of more than 600 islands scattered across about 2.5 million square kilometers of ocean.

Upon arriving on the tiny island, one of the Coast Guard officers realised that he was third cousins with one of the men, and fourth cousins with the other two.

The £3bn aircraft carrier was docked at Glen Mallan on Loch Long when the blaze took hold on Friday last week. Around 100 beds were destroyed by the flames with injured ship staff treated by medics. The fire is believed to have started in an air conditioning unit on the mess decks. Crews battled the flames with extinguishers before compartments were sealed off to prevent the blaze from spreading further, the Mirror reports. The ship, which was officially named by the late Queen Elizabeth in 2014, was moored to unload ammunition when the fire started.
